Tangents

The ill-considered, poorly articulated though modest (in scope) opinions of Ronan gather here: a disparate aggregate of ideas, likes, dislikes, fancies, curios, diversions and procrastinations.

Keeping up with the modern world: "...building an airplane in flight."

Folks with things to say and stuff to perpetuate:

Tumblr, I’m afraid I’ve gone and set up a wordpress installation. Where?
Over at http://www.delexical.com/tangents/.

So all blogging activity is to be found over there.

I do really like tumblr, I just wish it was a bit more scalable and had useful things that could be added like comments etc.

But I may someday return… hmmm

\\ picking a running mate is…like picking a pet \\

Gail Collins in the New York Times, July 21, 2008:

“…picking a running mate is…like picking a pet. How much time are you planning to spend with the little fellow? How much exercise will he be getting on an average day? On the one extreme, you have the William Wheeler model….On the other end, there’s the Cheney version in which the pet takes over the checkbook, diversifies the family investment portfolio and starts strafing the neighbor’s cat.”

\\ Re-inventing the Printing Press \\

Faber has set up a system whereaby books in it’s Faber Finds series are printed on demand, and when a copy is printed, the cover is given a uniquely generated feature border. So the physical book is only printed when you order it and it is given a generative cover.

Rather smart no? You can read about it on the Creative Review website.

Life Magazine in 1947 asked a bunch of cartoonists to draw their characters and then render them again with their eyes closed. The effect is brilliant. Many of the faces retain coherent elements such as a quiff or eyes but jumbled in a cubist mess. See the others here.

Find your ideal partner for life! GenePartner is a formula to match men and women by analyzing specific genes in their DNA.
GenePartner will analyze your DNA from a sample of your saliva. Based on the test results, you will receive a GenePartnerID number.

When you meet another GenePartner user (in person or online) that you’re interested in, you can enter his/her GenePartnerID in the matching system on GenePartner.com. GenePartner will then determine how genetically compatible you are.

UGH! DNA based dating service… I can’t articulate how horrific this sounds to me.

\\ The Wackness has a mixtape \\

I saw The Wackness in the Galway Film Fleadh and really enjoyed it loads and loads. It has an August 29th release date for the UK but I’m not sure we’ll see it on screens over here. In any case it’s the tale of Josh Peck’s weed-slinging teenager’s summer in 1994.

Ben Kingsley, sorry Sir Ben Kinglsey plays his pot smoking therapist (payment is by the dime bag) whose daughter in law becomes a love interest for the hip hop-loving, college-bound loser.

Well the soundtrack is loaded with East Coast hip hop of the period (Method Man has a bit part in the film itself) and an official mp3 mixtape for the movie is available over at The D-Nice Podcast. It’s worth the 24 minutes of your aural attention.
